Sofi Mendoza may have been born in Mexico. Still, she's spent most of her life in California, with Taco Bell being her closest connection to Mexican culture. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when Sofi and her friends embark on a weekend trip to Tijuana. The border patrol accuses her of having a counterfeit green card, leaving her stranded in Mexico until her parents can sort out the legal mess.

As Sofi's parents arrange for her to stay with long-lost relatives in rural Baja, she faces the challenge of adapting to her new surroundings. Despite missing out on senior prom and graduation, Sofi discovers the beauty of her heritage and finds a sense of belonging on both sides of the border.
